4 frågor till Franck van Dijk & Enya Bergman - De Italiaanse Oase (Holland)

Name 3 plants that need to be in a Mediterranean garden.

That’s a difficult question because there are so many beautiful plants but in a Mediterranean garden there definitely should be:

- An Olive Tree

- Hardy palms like Trachycarpus Fortunei or Wagnerianus.

- A fig tree, the Ficus Carica

- Also very nice in a Mediterranean garden are citrus trees but unfortunately not possible in Holland or Sweden.

What is your favorite plant (tree, shrub, palm ....) ?

For Franck that would be the Yucca Rostrata (photo 1), because of it’s beautifull trunk, leaves and flower that is coming out of it and because of the hardiness. This plant is hardy till -15 degrees Celcius

For Enya that would be the Brahea Armata (photo 2) because of its beautiful coloured leaves.

What to think about if you want to plant Mediterranean plants
in which Sweden, colder country.

I think that there a number of plants that are very suitable for cold-climate countries like Sweden. Trees like Ficus Carica, olivetrees, the grape-trees Vitis Vinifera, Punica Granatum would possible survive in cold countries. Of course it depends of the area you live (north or south) but these trees can survive up to temperatures that are below 10 degrees Celcius. Also some palm trees like Chamearops Humilis, Cerifera and Vulcano, Brahea Edulis, Brahea Armata, Trachycarpus Fortunei and Wagnerianus, Sabal Palmetto and Minor can survive temperatures between -10 and -15 degrees Celcius.

Favorite Country and place around the Mediterranean ?

That would be the Italian island Sicily without any doubt.
